Third Asian Indoor Games concludes in Hanoi

The third Asian Indoor Games (AIG) lowed the curtain on Sunday after the ten-day competitions in 21 sports.

Malaysia concludes in 15th spot in the medal tally, with 3 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze medals at the third Asian Indoor Games,

China topped the gold medal tally with 48 golds, followed by host Vietnam with 42 golds and Kazakhstan 21.

Timothy Tsun Ting Fok, Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), said at the closing ceremony that Vietnam has made the3rd AIG a success. He is impressed by the warm hospitality of Vietnamese people, especially the volunteers.

Nguyen Danh Thai, vice president of the organizing committee of the 3rd AIG said athletes have demonstrated fine sportsmanship in the ten-day competitions. Asia is to embrace a greater future of sports, he said.

The 3rd AIG drew 43 countries and regions. The games include track and field, short course swimming, dancing, boxing, chess, shuttlecock, billiards and snooker, computer games and many others.

Malaysian pencak silat athlete Shamsuddin Ahmad Saiful Lubis added a GOLD to the country's medal tally at the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam on Friday. According to the event's official website, info.vaigoc2009.com, on Friday,Shamsuddin Ahmad Saiful Lubis won GOLD in the pencak silat Men's Single Tunggal event.

The Malaysian pencak silat squad has so far also contributed 5 bronze medals.

Back-up squad take the lead in Asian Indoor Games

PETALNG JAYA: After disappointing performances in the singles and doubles events, the boys from the national back-up squad showed promise in the team event when they took the lead in the first block of three games at the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam yesterday.

Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek, Kang Bo Long, Kelvin Keong and Rodson Tong put Malaysia in front with a combined score of 2,763 pinfalls ahead of Japan (2,178).

Bo Long started off with lines of 269-233-215 for a 717-three-game score. Rodson, however, was slightly off the mark with lines of 212-227-185 for a 625 total.

Kelvin then put Malaysia further in front with his total of 651 (232-215-204) before Syafiq extended their lead with a 770 total (247-268-255).

“I just enjoyed my game today and I hope to bowl the same way on short oil tomorrow,” said Syafiq.

In the girls’ competition, Malaysia’s Fatin Syazliana Adi Nasution, Tengku Emanina Laily Tengku Zahri, Sharon Koh and Sin Li Jane down a total 2,474 pins to sit in third place behind leaders South Korea (2593) and Japan (2488).

Fatin rolled down 603 pins (207-203-193) and Tengku Emanina 604 pins (194-211-199).

Southpaw Sharon put on a stellar show to fire lines of 221-195-233 for a 649 total while Li Jane had lines of 213-202-203 for a 618 total.

The second block of three games will be held today and only the top four teams will advance to the knockout stages tomorrow. THE STAR

Some cheer in Vietnam thanks to Li Jane and Fatin

PETALING JAYA: After a string of poor results in the singles event, the national back-up bowlers finally bagged a silver and a bronze in the doubles event of the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam yesterday.

Sin Li Jane and Fatin Syazliana Adi Nasution were denied the gold medal when they lost 393-432 to the South Korean combination of Son Yun-hee-Jeon Eun-hee in the final.

Saviours: Sin Li Jane partnered Fatin Syazliana (inset) to earn a silver medal in the doubles event at the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam yesterday.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Sharon Koh-Tengku Emanina Laily Tengku Zahri had to settle for the bronze after losing to Li Jane-Fatin 365-407.

With the medals won thus far, the team have equalled their previous medal tally achieved at the Macau Asian Indoor Games in 2007 when Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani took the silver medal in the singles event and the women’s team bagged the bronze.

In the singles competitions on Sunday, both the boys and girls failed to make the cut for the knockout stages.

The best Malaysian performer was Rodson Tong, who finished ninth with lines of 233-208-204-215-237-212 for a total of 1309.

Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan could only muster a total score of 1275 for 16th place, Kang Bo Leong (1252) 26th spot and Kelvin Keong (1165) 44th place.

In the girls’ competition, Sharon finished with a total score of 1171 to end up in 14th place. Fatin (1157) was 17th, Li Jane (1128) 32nd and Tengku Emanina (1100) 35th.

Bo Leong-Kelvin and Rodson-Syafiq also failed to finish in the top eight to qualify for the knockout stages of the boys’ doubles competition on Tuesday when they finished in 21st and 23rd places respectively.

“Their performance was below par in the singles event as most of them were nervous during the game,” said team coach Ben Heng. “They made unnecessary mistakes which proved costly.”

Ben said the girls finally got their act together to put up a solid performance in the doubles event.

“I hope they can continue with the momentum in the team event tomorrow (today) and bring back a gold medal,” he said.

The bowlers will play two blocks of three games over two days before advancing to the elimination round on Saturday. STAR

Bowling - Results Women's Singles

It was a day of an uninspiring performance by our women's
team in the Women's Sngles event today. Malaysia's Fatin
Syazliana gave a glimpse of hope when she reeled a
satisfactory 1st series of 184, 235 & 184 for a 603
sub-total to stay in contention on 4th place. The 20 years
old Fatin suffered a hiccup in the 4th game with 166 and
recovered with a 210 in her 5th game. At this point, Fatin
was on 9th place, the sole Malaysia's fore-runner for a
quarter-Finals berth with just a mere 3 pins difference
from 8th positioned opponent . Despite delivering solid
pocket balls, Fatin did not have enough revolutions to
carry 10 pin in her 6th game and ended with a split last
frame to register a poor 178 total. Her combine total of
1157 pushed her down to 17th position.

South-paw, Sharon Koh made a late rally but was not good
enough and has to settle for a 14th position with line of
192, 214, 168, 173, 199 & 225 for a 1175 aggregate.

Sin Li Jane was a pale shadow of herself and put up a
passive performance to post lines of 182, 160, 198, 205,
204, & 179 for a 1128 composite to be tied in 31st position.

Debutant, Tengku Emanina Laily was rather nervy as she
struggled with a roller-coaster lines of 212, 144, 190,
161, 204 & 189 for a 1100 total and ended on 35th position.

The Men's Doubles event is scheduled tomorrow at 09:00am and
13:30pm featuring our Malaysian pairs of Syafiq Ridhwan
partnering Rodson Tong and the pair of Kang Bo Long & Kelvin
Keong respectively.

3rd Asian Indoor Games opens in Vietnam

3rd Asian Indoor Games – Report from Hanoi of the Opening Ceremony on 30th October.

The Opening Ceremony of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games (AIG) took place in the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam, on the 30th October with participation of athletes from 43 countries and regions.

The March Past of the athletes and officials of each country was fully supported and well received by the big crowd in the stadium. Participation in the ceremony consisted of the President of the Social Republic Vietnam Nguyen Minh Triet, Deputy Prime Ministers, Heads of Committees of the Games, International delegations, Leaders of the Olympic Council of Asia, officials, representatives of the 43 participating nations special guests with estimated 5,000 government officials, coaches and referees.

The torch of the Games was lit by three typical faces of Vietnamese Sports namely: Bui Thi Nhung (Gold Medal of Indoor Athletics in Asia), Nguyen Tien Cuong (World Indoor Shuttlecock), Nguyen Tiet Cuong (Gold Medal of Indoor Archery in Asia) in the Stadium with the applause of the spectators and athletes.

The Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Mr.Hoang Tuan Anh Head of the Games Organizing Committee delivered the welcome speech. He hoped the event could contribute to the solidarity, cooperation and development of Asia.

The President of the Olympic Council of Asia Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah also spoke and in his speech he expressed the hope that the athletes could perform to their best at the AIG and demonstrate sports friendship.

The Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet announced the official opening of the games.
The theme for this year’s Games is "For a Rising Asia ". There are more than 2,500 athletes competing for 242 gold medals in 21 sports. The Games include Indoor Track and Field, DanceSport, Chess, Tenpin Bowling, Billiards, Computer games and many others. China sent a team of 128 athletes to take part in 13 sports at the Games.

The Opening Ceremony ended with a pledge on behalf of the participating athletes and referees followed by a great performance of 59-minute of a three-chapter festival directed by Peoples’ Artist, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Le Tien Tho. The performances depicted ‘The Sports Festival of the Youth’, ‘The Vietnamese Cultural Identity’’ and “Asia during the Period of Integration and Development’. There were 5,000 performers and students from Hanoi professional athletics as well as performing arts institutions.

The Opening Ceremony ended with an impressive firework display and everyone went back feeling good and ready for the competitions to begin.

Our young Malaysian team took to the lanes for the official
practice session at 10:00am this morning. AFter the 2 hours
official practice session, our coaches, Ben Heng and Allan
CHia were pleased wth our young bowlers adaption to the
oiling conditions of the lanes. Ben Heng was satisfied with
the attitude of our bowlers towards the lane approach
whilst Allan commented on their well disciplined in
preparing their bowling equipment prior to their practice
session. Ben believed our young charges would be able to
finish on the podium if they sustain their mental focus on
the game.

The Men's Singles event shall witness our young southpaw
rookie, Rodson Tong making his championship' debut with
Syafiq Ridhwan in the first squad at 09:00am whilst Kang Bo
Long and Kelvin Keong would be on the lanes in the 2nd
squad at 13:30 hours. The Women's Singles event is
scheduled on 02 Nov. 2009 at 09:00am.

At the Team Managers' meeting held yesterday, a record
entry of 20 countries confirmed their participation with 18
full Men's teams and 12 full Women's teams.

Games ceremony set to impress

Asian gold medalist Bui Thi Nhung will carry the flame to light the Asian Indoor Games (AIG) torch at the opening ceremony in My Dinh Stadium on October 30.

The top women’s high jumper will march with the flame from President Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum along Hanoi’s main streets before approaching the stadium.

Organiser said the opening ceremony will impress the over 40,000 participants of the biggest indoor games in Asia.

The AIG traffic sub-committee has mobilised over 500 cars and buses for the events in Hanoi alone. They will in charge of traffic control on the roads around venues to keep streets free of traffic jams during the 10-day competition.

The organizing committee has successfully tested the information system for the Games at 27 venues in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Quang Ninh.- VOVNEWS

The flag hoisting ceremony for sports delegations taking part in the third Asian Indoor Games (AIG) took place at Olympics Square, in Ha Noi’s My Dinh National Stadium yesterday.

As planned, the ceremony for the 41 countries and territories that will compete at the 10-day event will last for three days, through tomorrow.

The flag raising ceremony for the Viet Nam team was held yesterday afternoon with the participation of the nation’s most outstanding athletes.

Viet Nam will compete at the Games with the aim of reaching eighth place in the overall medal tally, with 15-20 gold medals. - VNS

Health board to prepares for AIG

The third Asian Indoor Games’ Doping Test and Health Board has established 53 ad hoc groups to work the event at gymnasiums, press centres and hotels.

Each group includes two doctors, two nurses and one driver who will work 24 hours a day.

The Doping Test and Health Board has set up projects to prevent an H1N1 flu pandemic.

As far as doping is concerned, around 500 samples will be taken, instead of the usual 200. - VNS

HCM CITY — Viet Nam futsal’s desire to win a medal for the first time at a continental competition suffered a major setback when home teams were hammered by the Malaysians and the Thais.

Viet Nam men’s team lost 8-2 to Malaysia in the opener at the men’s futsal event at the third Asian Indoor Games, yesterday in HCM City.

Viet Nam, the runners-up at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship four months ago, started off well with an opener only two minutes into the first half, after Malaysian goalkeeper Mohd Hafis Awang allowed Quan to control the ball and tap it in.

However, Malaysia stayed calm and brought the heat. The home team’s hastiness in widening the score exposed many lethal openings in their defence to Malaysia, who opted to defend in Only three minutes later, Muizzudin Mohd Haris converted a cross from Mohd Ruzaley Abdul Aziz to put Malaysia ahead 2-1 before the break.

With the difference of only one goal, nearly 2,000 home fans waited for a comeback in the second half from the home team, but things just went from bad to worse.

Malaysia continued to punish Viet Nam when Jamhuri Zainuddin and Qaiser Heshaam Abdul Kadir scored a goal each just four minutes into the second half to make the score 4-1.

Pattaya decided to take risks by replacing goalkeeper Dang Phuoc Anh with a fifth player, but the change proved fatal when Malaysian skipper Addie Azwan Zainal took full advantage of the empty goal to add two, putting Malaysia in the clear 6-1.

Quan brought home another goal, but Muizzudin Mohd Haris and Mohd Ruzaley Abdul Aziz each scored again to secure a brutal 8-2 victory.

To have a place in the quarter finals, Viet Nam must win against Bahrain and Jordan in their remaining matches.

On the women’s side, the Viet Nam team also lost 6-1 to the Thai women in the opener at the third Asian Indoor Games yesterday at Tan Binh Gymnasium.

The Thai team proved too strong for the home team, who were buoyed by thousands of young students cheering them on.

Sasicha Phothiwong tapped in a cross from Siranya Srimanee on the left wing to open the score four minutes inside the first half, and Orathai Srimanee collected the ball from Siranya’s corner to drive home another just two minutes later. — VNS

Heartbeat of the 3rd AI Games

Located at the Hanoi Exhibition and Fair Center, the Operations Center of the 3rd AI Games was officially put into operation on the 24th of October, 2009. The Center has many functional rooms and offices: a Conference room, Sport Techinical Sub-committee, Reception and Protocol Sub-committee, Logistics and Public Services, Transportation Sub-committee and Information Technology and Communication Sub-committee offices.

SKUAD futsal lelaki dan wanita kebangsaan meletakkan sasaran untuk melepasi saingan peringkat kumpulan pada temasya Sukan Dalam Dewan Asia 2009 (AIG III) di Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam yang akan bermula Rabu depan.

Pengurus skuad futsal kebangsaan, Hamidin Mohd. Amin berkata, skuad lelaki diharap sekurang-kurangnya mengulangi kejayaan ke suku akhir pada edisi 2007 di Macau manakala skuad wanita yang terkandas pada peringkat kumpulan ketika itu berpeluang cerah ke separuh akhir kali ini.

"Dua tahun lalu, skuad lelaki tewas kepada Uzbekistan pada suku akhir. Diharap kehadiran beberapa pemain baru dapat meningkatkan prestasi pasukan dan kita dapat memperbaiki rekod tersebut di Vietnam nanti.

"Bagi skuad wanita pula, mereka telah mendapat bebe- rapa pemain baru yang berkualiti dan akan digabung dengan beberapa senior dari skuad Sukan SEA 2007.

"Saya lihat prestasi mereka kini lebih mantap," katanya pada sidang media di Hotel Hilton, Petaling Jaya malam kelmarin.

OCM To Send 150-Member Contingent For Asian Indoor Games

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- A 150 Malaysian contingent will participate in eight sports at the third edition of the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam from Oct 30 to Nov 8.

The contingent, comprising 90 athletes and 60 officials, will be participating in the games that features 39 other countries.

The eight sports hosted are Dance sports, Indoor Petanque, Hoop Sepaktakraw, Indoor Kabaddi, Pencak Silat, Futsal (men and women), Dragon and Lion Dance (Dragon, Southern Lion, Northern Lion) and bowling.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar said the contingent no specific gold medal target was set for the games as they were non-Olympic sports.

"Nevertheless, I hope the athletes competing in their respective sports will bring home some medals as it is an honour to represent Malaysia at an international event," said Tunku at the flag handing ceremony here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Chef-de-Mission N Shanmugarajah said though there was no specific medal target, he believed the athletes would excel in the games.

The games will be staged at three cities in Vietnam, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Hai Duong.

Historically, the games came about when the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) raised the idea of an Asian Indoor Games in 2001, aimed at further promoting and arousing interest in sports activities among Asian people.

The first Asian Indoor Games was held in Thailand in 2005 and the second was hosted by Macao in 2007.

VietNamNet Bridge – Preparations for the third Asian Indoor Games - the biggest sporting event of the year - are almost complete, the games' organising board in HCM City said.

Nguyen Hung, deputy director of the city's Department of Sports, Culture and Tourism, said that 10 competition venues and three practice venues had been fully equipped.

The city has also taken care of transportation and health issues. Hung said, adding that some streets would be resurfaced to make travelling to competition venues more convenient, and also that transport police would escort teams.

Nguyen Tuan Viet, head of the ceremony's sub-committee in HCM City, said that finishing touches were being made to the opening ceremony preparations.

An AIG park, which will open on October 29 and close on November 7, will display information relating to previous AIG Games, as well as information on HCM City's sports, economy and society.

The park will have an area for folk games, a stage with nightly programmes, a dining area offering international cuisine and an area for displaying made-in-Viet Nam products. The park will also have a model of Ha Long Bay.

The park will be fully finished on October 22, Viet said. Nguyen Hong, director of the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) in HCM City, which will be based at Phu Tho Gymnasium, said that finishing touches to the centre would be completed on October 26.

A campaign to collect two millions signatures in support of the Games was launched on Sunday in HCM City.

Sports fans across the country can sign the A2 book or go online at www.2trieuchuky.yume.vn.

Hoang Vinh Giang, vice head of the Games' organising committee, said 37 countries and territories would be coming to HCM City. The World Sports Corporation, the sponsoring consultant for the games' organising board, said major sponsors included Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication (VNPT), Tan Hiep Phat Beverage Corporation and Viet Nam Insurance Corporation (Bao Viet).

The Games in Viet Nam will be the last Asian Indoor Games. The sporting venue will later be combined with the Martial Arts Games and called the Asian Indoor-Martial Arts Games in 2004. Qatar, Bahrain and Turkmenistan are bidding to host the event.

Indoor arena put to the test

HA NOI — Viet Nam will host an indoor athletics tournament at the 3,100-seat My Dinh Indoor Athletics venue from tomorrow.

The two-day event – a pre-Asian Indoor Games tournament – aims to test the new indoor sports complex in preparation for the games, to be held in Viet Nam for the first time, from October 30 to November 8.

Overseen by the Olympic Council of Asia and Asian Athletics Federation, this week’s event will attract the participation of Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, who will compete in running, high jump, long jump and shot-put.

Duong Duc Thuy, head of athletics section of the National Sports Administration, said some of Viet Nam’s top short and medium-distance runners would be absent from the event because they were in training for the main event. They included Southeast Asian Games gold medallists Vu Thi Huong, Truong Thanh Hang and Nguyen Dinh Cuong.

The new sports venue, located in the My Dinh Athletes Training Centre in western Ha Noi, is one of the most modern in the country and a landmark in the capital. It was built in preparation for the Asian Games.

It measures 31,000sq.m, will hold 3,000 spectators and accommodate 13 field and track events for the games.

The Asian Games events will be held in Ha Noi, HCM City, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Quang Ninh.

NATIONAL coach Holloway Cheah has opted for youth for the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam on Oct 30-Nov 8.

The men's team consists national champion Syafiq Ridhwan, Kang Bo Long, Kelvin Keong and Rodson Tong while Sharon Koh, Sin Li Jane, Fatin Syazliana and Tengku Emanina Laily make up the women's team.

"I see the tournament as more beneficial to the development of the younger bowlers. It will provide them the needed experience and exposure to progress," said Holloway yesterday.

"I am doing this because I want to have more options ahead of next year's Guangzhou Asian Games and the Men's World Championships in Germany.

Syafiq Ridhwan is the most experienced bowler in the Asian Indoor men’s squad.

"However, those who make an impact at the Indoor Games will not necessarily be considered for the Asian Games and world meet. They need to impress in a few other tournaments first before being considered."

Syafiq is the most experienced bowler in the Asian Indoor men's squad, having won several international titles including last year's PBAB Bevida-Storm International Classic.

Sharon, as an elite squad member, will lead the women's team. The left-handed bowler won the Singapore Open title recently.

Meanwhile, Zulmazran Zulkifli, a two-time Malaysian Open champion and World Ranking Masters winner Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman will be based in Malacca 10 days before the start of the AMF World Cup (Nov 14-21).

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia are expected to send a 141-member contingent for the 10-day Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi, Vietnam starting Oct 30.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Honorary Secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the contingent would be made up of 73 men and 33 women athletes while the rest are officials.

"We will compete in eight of the 22 sports competed, namely petanque, sepak takraw hoop, kabbadi, silat, futsal, tenpin bowling, lion dance and dragon dance," he told Bernama when contacted on Wednesday.

The OCM has not set any target for the Games because sports competed in the Games were basically recreational sports while OCM's focus is on sports like SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, said Kok Chi, adding that the expenses would be borne by the respective associations or in some cases, the National Sports Council (NSC).

"Sports associations that can effort may participate, but even then some sports will have their own focus and an idea of what games to participate.

"Like for example, the Malaysian National Cycling Federation's focus may be on the Olympics and different from the National Kabbadi Association's focus because the sport does not feature in many major games.

"So these types of sports will be eager to participate in such games. And for OCM, since there are more than 50 types of sports, some are recreational sports and we cannot focus on all the sports because the Olympics has only 26 sports," he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on news reports that venues for the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted by New Delhi, India, Kok Chi said it was normal for host countries to face such situations due to various reasons, including financial.

"But I am confident India will be ready and the games will go on as scheduled," he said.

Indian media reports claimed that 13 of the 19 venues to be used for the Games were facing serious delays although the Games is just 14 months away.

OCM To Determine Categories For SEA Games Bound Athletes

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) are expected to determine the categories of entry for the 600 national athletes competing in the Laos SEA Games.

According to OCM Honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, the OCM would determine the category of the respective athletes after meeting the respective National Sports Associations (NSA) and the National Sports Council (NSC) tomorrow.

Athletes who qualify on merit or meet the qualifying mark set by the OCM would be listed under Category A whereby their expenses would be borne by OCM while the cost of sending those under Category B (those who do not meet the qualifying mark or border-line cases), would be borne by their respective NSA.

However, if an athlete under Category B wins a medal, his or her expenses would be reimbursed by OCM.

In the Laos SEA Games scheduled from Dec 9-18, Malaysia are taking part in 20 of the 25 sports hosted, namely aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, billiard & snooker, boxing, cycling, football, golf, judo, karate-do, pencak silat, petanque, sepak takraw, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wushu.

Meanwhile, Sieh said OCM had also decided that all athletes who would be participating in the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi from Oct 30 to Nov 8, would be placed under Category B.

"The NSAs had agreed to foot their expenses," he said.

He added that the decision was made considering the fact that the Games was not a major competitive event and did not meet the criteria set by OCM and NSC.

OCM has approved the participation of 100 athletes for the Games and compete in eight sports - Hoop Sepak takraw, Shuttle Cock juggling, Kabadi, Futsal, Basketball 3 on 3, Pencak Silat, Dragon Dance and Petanque, he said.

More than 10,000 people participated in a walk in Ho Chi Minh City on March 29 to welcome the upcoming 3rd Asian Indoor Games (AIG) to be hosted by Vietnam this year for the first time.

Walkers wearing headbands and carrying the AIG flag paraded along a 2.5km route, from the Municipal Theatre to Dong Khoi, Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Hue, Le Loi, Pasteur, Ly Tu Trong, then returned to the starting point.

Also on the occasion, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, vice chairwoman of the municipal People’s Committee, received the AIG flag from the Vietnam Olympic Committee and the AIG organising board, officially launching the Games campaign in the city.

Ho Chi Minh City is one of six selected localities to host AIG events. It has 11 venues to hold 8 events and 6 others reserved for training.

The Men’s Futsal team qualified for the Quarter-Final, but lost 6 goals to 1 goal, to Uzbekistan, while the Women’s Futsal team lost all its preliminary matches. In Kabaddi, the Malaysian team won one match against Sri Lanka, by a score of 33 points against 31 points, out of the 5 matches played. In Indoor Hockey, the Men’s team qualified for the Bronze medal play-off, but loss to the India by a score of 4 goals against 7 goals.

Bowling: Women claim another bronze

THE women’s bowling back-up squad claimed another bronze medal at the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau yesterday.

Led by Zatil Iman, the team posted 4,887 pinfalls after completing all two blocks in qualifying to take second position behind the star-studded South Korea team.

But the Malaysians failed to hold on to that advantage as they lost 793-720 to China in the semi-final.

The South Koreans, led by world champion Choi Jin A, took the gold beating China 957-833 in the final.

The Korean men made it a double when they won the men’s event beating Qatar 922-829 in the final. Malaysia finished 12th.
Malaysia had earlier won a silver in the singles event through Zatil.

It was, however, a good performance from the bowlers considering they were facing more fancied bowlers from other countries who sent their first-choice teams to the Games.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Two national chess players gave Malaysia another two bronze medals at the ongoing 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau, China, today.The medals came from Men's Individual Classical Chess player, Hafizulhilmi Agu, and Siti Zulaikha in the Women's Individual Classical Chess.With the current medal tally of two silver and three bronze, Malaysia are in overall 17th position.China continue to lead with 46 gold, 21 silver and 19 bronze, followed by Hong Kong (11, 8, 8) and Thailand (10, 22, 19).

Saturday afternoon women category played the preliminary matches between 6 teams. Vietnam draw with Uzbekistan in the first match showed a very balanced game were the ladies fought hard to keep their defense and offense. THE national back-up bowling squad failed to win a medal at the 2nd Asian Indoor Games when Mohd Nur Aiman lost in the men’s singles quarter-final at the Cotai International Sports Complex in Macau yesterday.

Nur Aiman lost to Kuwait’s Khaled Al-Dubyyan 215-235 in the match which was decided over one game.Nur Aiman was the only Malaysian to make it to the second round after finishing sixth in qualifying with a total of 1,373 pinfalls. Only the top eight proceed. The event was won by Nayef Eqab Alabadla of the United Arab Emirates who beat South Korean Kim Hyun Suk 211-172 in the final.

Other Malaysians who failed to shine were Jonathan Lim, who finished 19th, Zaid Izlan at 31st and Syaherezan Fajrin at 44th. Trish Khoo, Zatil Iman, Sin Li Jane and Norhanizah Abu Bakar will start their challenge in the women’s singles today.

Injuries May Dash Futsal Team's Hopes In Macau, Says Coach

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- With a number of first-choice players on the crock list, national Futsal coach P. Balakrishnan is forced to rely on a mixed squad for the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau from Thursday to Nov 3.

Malaysia have been placed in Group A with Macau, Asean champion Thailand and Afghanistan. All matches will be played at the IPM Multisport Pavilion.

Balakrishnan said a mixture of seniors and juniors was unavoidable owing to injuries to regulars Saiful Mohd Nor, Fairuz Karnim, Mohd Phua Yusof and Zaidi Zulkifli, among others.

"It's a bit disappointing as the indoor games is one of the venues we had hoped to use as a base to build a stronger team for the SEA Games.

"Nevertheless, I hope the players can raise the level of their game to be competitive in Macau," he said.

The team preparing for the Macau games returned recently for a playing tour in Jakarta where they won in one match, drew in another and lost in two.

They opened their campaign against two club sides, going down 1-2 to Biang Bola and beating TNI 4-2.

They lost narrowly 2-3 to the Indonesian national team and completed their tour with a 2-2 draw against the same side a day later.

"Surely, there's improvement but in Macau, we will be up against Thailand, a side we all know have been the Asean Futsal king for several years," added Balakrishnan.

The other two matches in the group will be anybody's game.

Bowling: Double mission for Trish in Macau

NATIONAL back-up squad bowler Trish Khoo will be on a double mission when she competes in the 2nd Asian Indoor Games starting on Friday in Macau.

She aims to help the team win the gold medal, and then to impress the Sea Games squad selection committee.

"I am very excited about the Games. I hope to help the team win gold as this is our best chance," said the 20-year-old from Sabah.

"Of course if I do win in the singles, it would be great but I don't want to pressure myself as this is only my first time competing in a multi-games like this."

Trish said the Asian meet will also be her best chance to impress and be included in the Sea Games squad.
"I hope to bowl in the Sea Games but my teammate Zatil Iman is also doing very well so far this year.

"So, I think the Games will be a very important competition for us, as whoever performs will be in the squad."

Trish, who is the only spinner in the national team, joined the back-up squad in July following an impressive performance that saw her win the Thailand Open Youth title in May. She finished second in the Indonesian Open in August.

Presently, a first-year computer engineering student at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Trish is waiting to be transferred to Universiti Putra Malaysia to suit her new life with the national team.

"I have been training in Sabah all this while and have only started centralised training with the team since the training camp in Penang two weeks ago," she said.

"With the move to Kuala Lumpur, I will get to train under the national team programme and will not need to skip classes for training and competition."

Meanwhile, coach Foong Tat Meng said the Macau Games, which ends on Nov 3, will serve as an exposure for the team.

"I heard the other countries are sending strong teams, but it doesn't matter to me," said Tat Meng.

"This is a place for them to gain experience to prepare them to get nearer to the elite squad standard. But I am sure they will give the experienced bowlers a fight."

Tat Meng said the team, who will leave today, had only a short Raya break and resumed training last Wednesday.

The squad - Men: Zaid Izlan, Muhd Nur Aiman, Syahereza Fajrin, Jonothan Lim; Women: Trish Khoo, Zatil Iman, Sin Li Jane, Noor Hanizah.

THE 2nd Asian Indoor Games will be organized in Macao for nine days beginning on October 26. According to the organizing committee (MAIGOC), 3,575 athletes from 45 countries have already sent in their entries. Of them 74 are medal winners at Asian and world championships. Their number is likely to increase in the following days. The Games consist of both competing and demonstration sports. There are 17 disciplines in the first – aerobic gymnastics, bowling, chess, sport billiards, sport dance, dragon and lion dance, electronic sports, extreme sports, fin swimming, futsal, hoop sepaktakraw, indoor athletes, indoor cycling (artistic cycling and cycle ball), indoor hockey, kabaddi, muay, and short course swimming. The three demonstration sports are kickboxing, kurash and 3on3 Basketball. KUALA LUMPUR: Young rising star Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani will be out to consolidate her place in the SEA Games bowling squad when she swings into action in the 2nd Asian Indoor Games, which will be held in Macau from Oct 26-Nov 3.

The 19-year-old Zatil, who bagged her first senior international title at the Singapore Open last month, is one of the bowlers in the eight-member team down for the Indoor Games.

Based on her current form, back-up bowler Zatil is one of the frontrunners for the six-member women’s team for the SEA Games bowling competition in Bangkok.

The others in the team for Macau are Trish Khoo, Nornahizah Abu Bakar, Sin Li Jane, Mohd Zaid Izlan Ibrahim Hakimi, Syahereza Fajrin Abdul Manan, Lim Chin Lung and Mohd Nur Aiman.

Yesterday, Games chef-de-mission Datuk Roy Rajasingham said the Asian Indoor Games would be a platform for some of Malaysia’s athletes to prepare for the SEA Games.

“Some of the top athletes are involved in bowling, hockey and futsal. I am confident that the Macau Games will provide them with stiff competition,” said Rajasingham, who is also the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) vice-president.

Malaysia will be competing in nine out of the 16 sports in Macau. The sports are bowling, chess, xiangqi (Chinese chess), dancesport, dragon and lion dance, extreme sports, futsal, cycling, hockey and kabbadi.

Zatil

Malaysia will not be taking part in hoop sepaktakraw, cue sports, aerobic gymnastics, electronic sports, fin swimming, athletics and muay.

“I regret that we are not represented in athletics. These Games are a springboard for athletes to earn places to compete in other regional and international tournaments,” he said.

On the projected medal target in Macau, Rajasingham said: “We have a conservative goal of winning at least five gold and three silver medals.”

At the inaugural Indoor Games, Malaysia took part in only two sports and returned home with one gold medal through Ahmad Fadzil Musa in skateboarding.

The athletes are funded by their respective national sports associations. Incentives are not given but the OCM will consider if there are outstanding results.

The Second Asian Indoor Games
Offer Spectators Some Offbeat Sports

Faced with tough competition from Japan, can the Latin ballroom dancers of India cha cha cha their way to a gold medal? Will China claim the regional lion dancing crown against Malaysia's highly rated movers and shakers? And can the bleary-eyed videogamers of Mongolia notch up a rare sporting victory for their nation?

These and many other burning questions will be answered at the Second Asian Indoor Games, held in Macau from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3. The dancers and gamers will be joined there by Thai kick boxers, Sri Lankan kabaddi players, Indonesian hoop takraw aces and hundreds more patriotism-fueled athletes from 40-plus nations striving for medals in more than 20 sports.

The aim of the biennial event, according to the Olympic Council of Asia, is to "promote the Olympic ideal to Asian people" and "arouse their enthusiasm in sports that are good for mental and physical health."

That's all well and good, but for spectators the event serves another purpose: With so many mainstream sports excluded from the games, where else can you see so many quirky sports in one place? As well as only including sports that are played indoors, the council decided the event should have no overlap with the Olympics. So even events that sound familiar are often composed of obscure subcategories: In the pool, for example, we have fin-swimming (racing with flippers on), while on the cycle track there's artistic cycling (gymnastics on a bike) and cycle ball (soccer on a bike).

Next to those, events such as bowling and indoor field hockey may feel a little pedestrian. Other sports on show, running the gamut from the everyday to the exotic, include aerobic gymnastics, BMX freestyle, muay thai (Thai boxing), sports climbing, kurash (Uzbek wrestling), cue sports (yes, that does mean snooker and pool) and futsal (indoor soccer).

Lion Dancing

With its weighty props, colorful costumes and traditionally dressed musicians, lion dancing is an elaborate affair. It's also a dangerous one: The two athletes hiding beneath the front and back of the large lion costume dance precariously along a series of slender poles of varying heights while the rest of their troupe plays traditional music. A misstep can mean a broken leg or worse. Each routine tells a different story, with the dancers striving to create the illusion of an agile four-legged cat being curious, playful, scared and excited. Judges rate routines by technique, difficulty and coordination with the music.

The sport originates from China, but Malaysia's decorated Kun Seng Keng troupe is confident it can win gold. That's thanks partly to lion dancing's popularity in Malaysia, not just among ethnic Chinese but also the rest of the country's population, says the troupe's secretary Ang Kuan Yau.

Kabaddi

Kabaddi teams from India and Pakistan compete for gold at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar last year.

Kabaddi is less elaborate than lion dancing; for starters, there's not a single piece of equipment. Two seven-player teams face each other from different halves of a 12.5-by-10-meter court. A "raider" from one side enters the other and tries to touch opponents and then jump back over to his side without getting captured (there's only a men's competition in the games). If he is captured -- as in grabbed, held and immobilized by opposing players -- the other team scores a point and he's out. But if he touches any opponents and makes it back to his side, then his team scores, and the tagged opponents are out. To make things interesting, the raider cannot inhale while on the other side -- and to prove it, he must continually chant the word "kabaddi," which comes from the Hindi term meaning "to hold one's breath."

The game is more violent than it sounds, with tackles getting vicious at times. Speed, strength, good reflexes and strategic thinking are all required, says E. Prasad Rao, technical director of the Asian Amateur Kabaddi Federation. Powerful lungs and endurance help, too, as the game lasts 40 minutes with only a five-minute break in the middle.

India, where the game originated, is a strong contender for the gold, but Japan, Iran, Bangladesh and Pakistan also all have talented squads.

Hoop Takraw

Almost as if the Southeast Asian sport of sepak takraw (kick volleyball) is too popular, the Asian Indoor Games has instead turned to its lesser-known cousin, hoop takraw. It's a team sport, but there is no interaction between opposing teams. Five players stand in a circle beneath a triangular hoop with a pyramid-shaped net on top of it, 4.75 meters (for men) or 4.5 meters (for women) overhead. Each side of the net contains a tiny hole, and the objective is to kick, knee, head or shoulder the ball into one of the holes as often as possible within 30 minutes.

As in kick volleyball, Thailand is the team to fear; the coaches of its men's team say they are 90% confident of winning gold. The Thais' biggest rivals are from Myanmar, where a traditional sport called chinlone parlays smoothly into hoop takraw.

Dance Sport

This competition is broken into two categories, standard and Latin, each including five styles; for standard, they are waltz, Viennese waltz, tango, slow foxtrot and quickstep; for Latin, samba, cha cha cha, rumba, pasodoble and jive. A handful of couples dance at the same time in front of the judges, who rate their routines.

Indian competitor Shannon Benjamin says the Japanese, who receive both top-notch international training and extensive government support, are the ones to watch. But with more than 30 million dance-sport enthusiasts, expect a strong showing from China, too.

E-Sports

New to this year's event is the e-sports category, in which contestants will duke it out in popular sports-related videogames such as the soccer title FIFA 07. Videogames join chess and xiangqi, a Chinese board game, among the less strenuous competitions at the games. But "athletes in (these) sports have to apply a lot of techniques and mental abilities to win," says Eric Chau, director for cultural events and communication for the Macao Second Asian Indoor Games Organizing Committee. The titles selected all promote Olympic ideals because, argues the committee, they're all related to real-world sports (soccer, basketball and motorsport).

The finals will be held on a stage with a handful of computers, and spectators will be able to watch the action on a big screen. The Mongolian team, which came away empty-handed from the first Indoor Games in Thailand two years ago, expects to win some medals in this category. Tsogt Sharavrentsen, a manager with Mongolia's national e-sports program, points to his star athlete, 19-year-old Lkhagvasuren Byambasuren, who forged his FIFA 07 skills in the Internet cafes of Ulaanbaatar. But the Chinese, in particular, notes Mr. Sharavrentsen, are formidable competitors.

The Asian Indoor Games is a multi-sport event held every two years among athletes representing countries from Asia. The games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia. The first games were held in 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 2nd Asian Indoor Games will be held in Macau, China from October 26, 2007 to November 3, 2007. Most events will take place at the Macao East Asian Games Dome. THE 187-member Malaysian contingent for the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau on Oct 26-Nov 3 will be looking to better the one gold and one silver medal haul in Bangkok two years ago.

Chef-de-Mission Datuk Roy Rajasingham said although no official target is set, the athletes should be able to deliver better results.

"Compared to the 2005 Games where we only competed in two sports, we are competing in 10 sports in Macau, so we should be able to do better.

"I am hoping that we win five gold medals, and we are especially hopeful that our bowling team deliver," he said.

Malaysia will be competing in bowling, chess, Xiangqi (Chinese chess), dance sport, dragon & lion dance, extreme sports, futsal, indoor cycling, indoor hockey, kabaddi and 3 on 3 basketball.
"The Indoor Games are a prelude to the Sea Games in December.

"Some sports associations are taking this as a selection or qualifying event while for those who have qualified, this is a good place for them as preparation."

Rajasingham is however disappointed the Malaysia Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) refused to send a team to Macau.

"This is a very good opportunity for young athletes to gain exposure, and I am sure if we compete in the indoor athletics events, we will at least add another few medals.

Skateboarder Ahmad Fadzil Musa, the sole gold medalist in 2005, will be the flag bearer while chess player Siti Zulaikha Muhd Foudzi will serve as torch bearer in Macau.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is aiming for five golds and five silvers at the second Asian Indoor Games scheduled from Oct 26 to Nov 3 in Macau.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) vice-president Roy Rajasingham said the target was achievable as more participants would be sent for the meet compared to the previous outing in Bangkok two years ago.

This year, Malaysia was sending 187 participants, including officials, and the athletes would take part in 11 events against those from 45 other Asian countries, he told a press conference here today.

In the previous games, Malaysia sent only 34 athletes and officials. They won only a gold and a bronze and were placed 16th among 37 nations taking part.

"The OCM's objective is very clear, we want to help develop in the youths those moral and physical qualities that come from fair competition in sports.

"We want to train them to be competitive so that they will get their chances to compete in major events like the SEA Games or Commonwealth Games if they are good enough," Roy said.

He said the OCM might also consider paying for the athletes' expenses if they managed to win golds because as of now the expenditure was borne by the sports associations.

The Malaysian delegation will leave for the Macau meet on Oct 23.

A Halal Food Test Event organized by MAIGOC took place at the Hotel Royal Macau yesterday (23 September), inviting media and MAIGOC staff to participate in the testing of more than 13 different specialties, with introduction of the food to the participants by Mr Cherma, Director of the supplying company. Operation check lists were also given out to the participants by MAIGOC, asking the opinion on the variety and quality of the food, the environment of the restaurant, and hygiene as references for the caterer. The company will be in charge of organizing and production of the Halal Food for immediate distribution to 14 venues during the Games.

Over 20 countries in Asia are resided with Islamic communities. Aside from pork which is prohibited in the Halal Food culture, it is nevertheless a delicacy with strong traditional background and unique specialty. The test event has provided the media and MAIGOC staff with an insight of the Islamic custom through the introduction, the participants opinions were also gathered for enhancement in the Halal Food catering service during the Games. In providing services tending to and respecting the different cultures and religions, MAIGOC looks forward that all Games participants will make Macao a home away from home.

Pakistan to Compete in 4 of 19 Disciplines at Indoor Asian Games

ISLAMABAD: A 29-strong contingent from Pakistan will participate in four of the 19 sports disciplines to feature during the 2nd Indoor Asian Games at Macau from October 26 to November 3 this year.

Pakistani competitors will vie for medals in athletics, chess, kabaddi and snooker.

Pakistan had captured a silver medal through the efforts of athlete Abdul Rasheed when Olympic Council of Asia first organised Indoor Asian Games at Bangkok (Thailand) from November 12-19, 2005.

A 19-member contingent represented Pakistan in the disciplines of athletics and swimming in the maiden edition of the event two years back.

The Games on view in the 2nd edition at Macau will be Aerobic Gymnastics, Bowling, Chess, Xiangqi, Cue Sports, Dance Sport, Dragon & Lion Dance, Electronic Sports (E-Sports), Extreme Sports and BMX Freestyle/Inline, Stunt/Skateboard, Extreme Sports and Sports Climbing, Fin swimming (25m), Futsal, Hoop Sepaktakraw, Indoor Athletics, Indoor Cycling, Indoor Hockey, Kabaddi, Muay and Short Course Swimming (25m).

The Pakistan contingent will consist of 21 players, three contingent officials and five team officials.

Syed Muhammad Abid Qadri will be the Chef-de-Mission while other contingent officials will be Syed Amir Hamza Gilani (Secretary-cum-Treasurer) and Dr. Pervaiz Rizvi (Team Doctor).

Mahmood Riaz will be the manager of the athletes’ squad. The athletes in the squad will be Muhammad Imran and Muhammad Sajjad.

The Pakistani chess players in action at Macau will be Tanvir Mohiuddin Gilani, Mehmood Ahmed Lodhi, Amer Karim and Muhammad Younus while Syed Aftab Hussain Gilani will be their Manager.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has finalised a 29-man contingent comprising 21 players and 8 officials for the 2nd Asian Indoor Games, scheduled to be held at Macao from October 26 to November 3.

A PSB spokesman told reporters on Monday that Pakistan would compete in four disciplines: athletics, chess, kabaddi and snooker. Syed Mohammad Abid Qadri would be the chef-de-mission of the contingent. “The training camp for the players is in progress at the Pakistan Sports Complex,” he said.

Playing infront of 3,000 fans at the Fashion Island Mall, Thailand, still reeling from the abrupt passing of their coach Glaucio Castro, stuck to the education provided by the former Brazilian international’s lessons through stand-in coach Pattaya Piemkum in being disciplined in defence and quick in attack.

Blooding several new talents as well in the squad, Thailand scored first through captain Panuwat Janta in the 12th minute. Hassan Donyai then replied in the 22nd minute to make it 1-1 to go in at the break.

A breathtaking first period indeed which had the fans glued to the seats and definitely wanting more of the same in the second period.

The second half began where it was all left off as Thailand attacked relentlessly, with quick passing and fleet-footwork, aided by the promptings of the dynamic Janta and the intelligent Sermphan ‘Big Joe’ Khumthinkaew and Iran countered with their own repertoire of play like an impressive orchestra conducted by Mohamad Kesahvaz and Mohamad Taheri.

With end to end action, a goal was bound to come and it was the host who added to the tally again in impressive fashion. A quick neat through ball to Prasert Innui saw the attacker dragging the ball away from his marker for an explosive left-footed finish past Mostafa Nazany.

The lead lasted all of three minutes as Mohamad Taheri took advantage of a lapse in the Thai defence to make it 2-2.

Vietnam to send 138 athletes to second Asian Indoor Games

Vietnam will send 138 athletes to the second Asian Indoor Games in Macao from October 26 to November 3, reported Ho Chi Minh City Sports newspaper.

The newspaper said that the Vietnam Olympic Committee has submitted a list of 138 athletes, alongside 38 coaches and 22 officials, who will compete in Macao, to the Games organising board.

The list has also been submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for approval.

Accordingly, the athletes will compete in 12 sports, including track and field, swimming, diving, aerobics, dance sports, chess, Chinese chess, futsal, billiards and snooker, sepak takraw, lion and dragon dance, and bowling.

Also, Vietnam has set a target of winning one gold, five silver and nine bronze medals.

Vietnamese lion dancing expected to win medals at Asian Indoor Games

Vietnamese athletes will compete in 11 events at the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau from October 25 to November 3.

The events include track and field, swimming, diving, football, sports dancing, rattan ball, billiards, bowling, chess, aerobics and lion dancing.

Vietnam is expected to send 290 athletes to compete against others from 43 countries and territories in the region.

In particular, Nhon Nghia Duong, a Vietnamese lion dancing troupe from Ho Chi Minh City, will compete with rivals from China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

To make lion dancing become an event at the 2nd Asian Indoor Games, the Asian Unicorn, Lion and Dragon Federation was founded in July 2007 with 8 members. Then, the federation issued rules and provided training courses for referees in terms of lion dancing.

Four Vietnamese referees finished their courses in late July and will take part in the forthcoming event.

Vietnam has a chance to win medals, said Luu Hoan Phi, coach of the Vietnamese lion dancing delegation. Mr. Phi, also director of the Nhon Nghia Duong, and his troupe have performed in many foreign countries.

He predicted that the Chinese team with their tradition would win gold medals in unicorn dancing, meanwhile, Vietnam, Thailand, Macau and Malaysia would contend for the gold in the lion dancing event.

Over the past month, 22 members of the Vietnamese team have rehearsed for at least 3 hours a day in Binh Tan district, Ho Chi Minh City. Despite being busy with shows during the season, all these athletes will try their best to win medals at the contest.

Vuong Vi Nguyen, 22 years old and one of the best athletes, said that the team would overcome all difficulties to lift the trophy.

The Olympic Council of Asia selected Vietnam to hold the 3rd Indoor Games in Vietnam in 2009. To prepare for the event, the Vietnam Sports Committee, Hanoi People’s Committee and Hanoi’s Sports Department plan to build a sports complex in My Dinh commune, Tu Liem district at a cost of 200 billion VND.

Earlier, Vietnam's track and field athletes won five gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze at the pre-Asian Indoor Games in Macau.

At the 1st Indoor Asian Games, Vietnam ranked 21st with one silver and one bronze medal.

Dato Roy Rajasingham, Chef de Mission for the 2nd Macau Asian Games, and Vice-President of OCM, have started to visit teams that will be competing in the 2nd Macau Asian Indoor Games. The 2nd Asian Indoor Games will be held in Macau from 26th October 2007 till 3rd November 2007.

He visited the Northern Lion Dance team on Saturday 1st September 2007 during their performance at the 86th Annual Anniversary of the Kuala Lumpur Chinwoo Association. The Northern Lion Dance team will be competing together with the Southern Lion team and also Dragon Dance team in the coming Games.

Other than Dragon and Lion Dance, Malaysia will also be competing in Bowling, Chess, Xiangqi, DanceSport, Extreme Sports (BMX and Sports Climbing), Futsal, Indoor Cycling, Indoor Hockey and Kabaddi.

The other sports that Malaysia are not competing are Aerobic Gymnastic, Cue Sports, Electronic Sports, Finswimming, Hoop Sepaktakraw, Indoor Athletics, Muay and Short Course Swimming.

As for the demonstration sports Malaysia will be taking part in only 3on3 Basketball and not in Kickboxing and Kurash.

Vietnam’s unicorn dancers expect medals at Asian Indoor Games

Unicorn and lion dancing will be the events at the upcoming 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau from October 25 to November 3 with the participation of eight countries and territories, including Vietnam.

At this event, Vietnam will participate in track-and-field, swimming, diving, football, sport dance, sepak takraw, billiards, bowling, chess and Chinese chess, aerobics, lion and unicorn dancing.

HCM City’s Nhon Nghia Duong unicorn-lion-dragon dance troupe will represent Vietnam at the Asian Indoor Games and will compete against troupes from China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macau.

To turn unicorn and lion dancing into sports at the Asian Indoor Games, the Asian Unicorn-Lion-Dragon Dance Federation was established in Asia with eight member countries and territories.

The federation set down rules and trained a team of referees, including four from Vietnam, namely Luu Kiem Xuong, Luu Dang Phi, Luu Xuong Ky and Luy Ky Xuong. Those referees will participate in the 2nd Asian Indoor Games.

“Vietnam will possibly win medals in these events,” said coach Luu Hoan Phi of Nhon Nghia Duong troupe, who has led the troupe to many countries for performances.

Mr. Phi said that Vietnam’s unicorn and lion dance techniques were not behind others in the region. With its long tradition of unicorn dancing, China may win the gold medal in the unicorn dancing while Vietnam, Thailand, Macau and Malaysia will compete for the gold medal in lion dancing.

To prepare for this event, the Nhon Nghia Duong troupe has practised for more than one month so far, at least three hours per day, Mr. Phi said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is giving more priority on the Asian Indoor Games and this is evident in the bigger contingent that would be sent to the Second Asian Indoor Games to be held on Oct 26 until Nov 3 in Macau.

The Malaysian Chef-de-Mission Datuk Roy Rajasingham said for this game, the Malaysian contigent would consist of 139 athletes and 40 officials as compared to only 34 people representing the country in the first game in Bangkok in 2005.

"Malaysia would also participate in 10 sports of 13 events compared to only two sports in 2005," he told the media at the press conference on the 2nd Asian Indoor Games in Macau, here.

The 10 sports are Chess, Xiangqi, DanceSport, Dragon & Lion, Extreme Sports-BMX & Climbing, Futsal (Men & Women), Kabaddi, Hoop Sepaktakraw, Indoor Hockey and Cycling (Cycling Ball), he said.

Roy said the Second Asian Indoor Games was like an `opportunity games' for the athletes to do well and be an incentive.

Malaysia to send 100-strong contingent to 2nd Asian Indoor Games

Malaysia will send a contingent of 95 men and 29 women to participate in the 2nd Asian Indoor Games slated for Oct. 26 to Nov. 3 this year in Macau, China, a local official said here on Monday.

The Malaysians were expected to take part in nine of the 17 sports for contest, said Sieh Kok Chi, secretary of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

Malaysian athletes would not participate in aerobic gymnastics, snooker billiards, muay (Thai boxing), E-sport, fin swimming, indoor athletics, indoor hockey and short course swimming.
